How to Install Rivet Nuts without a Tool

Rivet nuts are known for their strength and ability to be fitted into blind holes. They can also be difficult to remove or dislodge. Another advantage of rivet nuts is their ease-of-use. It is a little-known fact that even if you don't have the right tools, you can still install them. This article will show you how to install rivet nuts with no tools.

What is a Rivet Nut and How Does It Work?

Let's start with a brief overview: Most rivet nuts are tubular, internally threaded, blind rivets. They can be installed and fastened blindly by anyone who is able to see only one side of the work. You can shape them so that they won't fall out of the hole you have drilled. The one type of rivet nut makes a bulge on one side of the work. The other goes into sleeves and is less obvious.

They don't require any fastening, and can be installed by anyone in just a few minutes. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including the mast of a sailboat or race car, as well as appliances and display cases in various industries. They can be attached to various objects with machine screws or bolts. This is useful for holding them together, such as display cases that need to be assembled multiple times.

What are the benefits of installing without a tool?

Rivet nuts' "blindness", which allows them to be used when fastening from one side or the other is impossible, can really make a difference. You don't have to go to the opposite side to install the rivet nuts. For example, the rivet nut is the best choice when you have only one side to work with, such as when you are assembling semi-trucks or trailers, or fixing structural problems that require heavy materials to be fastened together.

Most likely, you'll have a tool that is specifically designed for rivet nuts. There may be occasions when this is not possible. These situations will require you to use the few items that you have at your disposal to attach them. This DIY approach is not uncommon.

What can I do?

You will need to use more than your hands to install rivet nuts. A bolt that 1) has its own nuts and 2) fits into the rivet nut is also required. A washer or larger bushing should be able to fit tightly around the bolt. You will also need a wrench with an open end and a pair or water pump pliers to tighten the bolt or screw.

Once the rivet nut is in the hole, thread the loose nut on and then insert the bolt through the washer. After inserting the bolt into the rivetnut, you must thread on the loose nut. Then manually screw the bolt in until the washer and nut stop you from moving any further. You can then loosen the nut and remove the bolt from its rivet nut. You should deform the rivet nut and secure it.

This method is not universal. It is almost impossible to tighten stainless steel rivet nuts without a tool. This tool-free method can give you amazing results in a pinch.
