How to Install Rivet Nuts with No Tools

The toughness of rivet nuts and their ability to fit into blind holes is part of their appeal. However, they are also very difficult to remove. Another benefit of rivet nuts is their simplicity and ease of use. The good news is that they can be installed even if your tools are not the best. This guide will help you install rivet nuts without the use of a tool.

What is a Rivet Nut (or Rivet Nut)?

First, let us review the basics: rivet nuts are generally tubular, internally threaded blind bolts. Blindly installing and fastening them can be done by anyone. Once they have been inserted into a drilled hole, they can be deformed in a way that prevents them from falling out on their own. The rivet nut that creates a bulge is visible on the blind side. The other type goes in a sleeve, which is less visible.

Because they don't need additional fastening, anyone can easily install them in just a few moments. Because they are lightweight, they can be used in a multitude of industries, such as the masts of sailboats, race cars and golf carts. Once they are installed, they can be used with machine bolts and screws to fasten different objects to the application or to hold them together (e.g. a display case that needs to be assembled several times).

Why do I need to use a tool for installation?

They are very handy for fastening when it is not possible or too time-consuming to use rivet nuts. Instead of trying and reaching the other side of the job, you can just attach them from one side. You only have one side of the rivet nut, so it is a practical choice for assembling semi-trucks, trailers, and other structural repairs that require fastening heavy material together.

Usually, you will have a special tool for fastening rivet nuts. But, sometimes this isn't the case. For these situations, you'll need only the items you have to attach them. This DIY approach is feasible and common.

How can I do it?

It is possible to install rivet nuts without using a tool. However, this will require more than your naked hands. It is important that the bolt 1) has its own nut and 2) can be fitted into the rivet nuts. A larger washer or bushing is also necessary to tighten the bolt. A pair of water pump tools or pliers that can tighten the bolts or screws on the top of your machine are essential.

After inserting the rivet nuts into the hole you will need to thread on the loosenut and then put the bolt through either the washer or bushing. Place the bolt as far in the rivet nut as possible, then screw it in manually until the washer or nut prevents you from continuing. Finally, loosen the bolt and then remove it from the rivet nut. Secure the rivet nut by deforming it.

This method isn't universal. Stainless steel rivet nuts are almost impossible to tighten with a tool. Or at least, it is more difficult. This tool-free method is possible to achieve great results quickly.
