How to Install Rivet Nuts Using a Handheld Tool

One of the reasons rivet nuts are so popular is their toughness. You can install them into a blind hole. Another reason they are so popular is the ease of inserting and fastening them. You can install them even without the correct tools. Here are some tips on how to install rivet nuts using a non-tool.

What is a Rivet Nut, you ask?

First, let's review. Rivet nuts are mainly tubular, internally-threaded blind rivets. You can use them blindly to install and fasten them. They can be inserted into the hole and deformed so they don't come out by themselves. One type of rivet nuts creates a bulge in the work's blind side, while the other goes into the sleeves. This is less obvious.

These are easy to install and require no additional fastening. You can use them for everything from the mast on a sailboat to race cars, golf carts, appliances, display case and machines in every industry made from different materials. These bolts can be used to attach various objects to the final application, or to hold together objects such as a display box that has to be assembled and taken apart multiple times.

Why would I need a tool to install?

Because rivet nuts are blind, they can be very useful when fastening on both sides is difficult or impossible. Instead of trying to reach the other side, install them from the one side. When you have limited access to the other side, the rivet nuts are the best option.

You will usually have a dedicated tool to fasten rivet nuts. Sometimes, however, this may not be the case. You will only need to have a few things on hand to fasten these items. This DIY method is common and widely used.

How do I do this?

Even if you don't have a tool to install rivet nuts, your hands will be more important than your fingers. Also, you will need a bolt with a nut that fits inside the rivet nut. Also, a larger washer or bushing should fit snugly around the bolt. An open-end wrench is required, as well as a pair water pump or second wrench to hold the top bolt or machine screw in place.

The rivet nut must be inserted into the hole. Next, attach the loose nuts to the bolt and place it through the washer. You will insert the bolt as far as possible into the rivet nuts. Once the washer and nuts are removed, manually screw it in. The bolt can be removed from the rivet nuts by simply loosening the nut. Once the rivet nut is deformed, it should be fastened.

Unfortunately, this method does not work everywhere. Stainless steel rivet nuts can be difficult to tighten without a wrench. The good news is that this tool-free method can yield great results in a pinch.
