5 Tips for Installation and Use of Rivet Nuts

It can be hard to find a fastener for certain projects that work well with fragile or thin materials. The solution is rivet nuts. These nuts are also called blind nuts, blind rivet nuts and threaded nuts. The rivet nut, which is an alternative to the standard rivet, has a tubular round or splined body. It is a blind fastener that can be installed on the opposite side of the workpiece. This makes it very versatile.

Here are some tips on how to use and install rivet nuts.

1. Select the right rivet nuts

There are two types. The first one is designed for the application's backside to bulge when the bolt, pin or screw is tightened. The second type is pulled in a sleeve, so it doesn't bulge. Which one should you use? It depends on what you are using. Here are some options and styles you should consider:

Wide front-side Flange: This rivet-nut feature gives you a large load-bearing space to both reinforce the hole as well as keep the rivet nuts from being pushed through.

Thick flange: This feature provides extra strength and spacing.

Countersunk/low-profile head: With this feature, you ensure an installation that is nearly or completely flush.

Wedge head. Wedges under the head prevent the fastener's hole from becoming too large by "biting into" the mating material. This feature is ideal for soft materials, such as aluminum, fiberglass, and plastic.

Shape: There are many styles of rivet nuts. Each style is intended to prevent the fastener's turning at high torque levels.

Open or close: Rivet nuts are available in open- or closed-end styles. This prevents dust and water from getting into the assembly like with an automobile installation.

Thinner or thicker wall: While thick wall rivet nuts, also known as standard style, offer keyed head, thin wall rivets do not.

You don't need to know what type of rivet nut is required for your application. A fastener expert will help you make the right choice.

2. Use it in a variety of materials.

Rivet nuts are simple-to-install and reliable fasteners. They can provide strong load bearing threads into thin or weak gauge materials, such as castings. Because of their large grip range tolerance, rivet nuts are able to be installed in many different material thicknesses.

3. Practicaler than other fasteners

Rifles are made of aluminum, stainless steel and steel, brass, and monel. They offer many benefits over bolts, self tapping screws, and pressed inserts. Like other fasteners like weld nuts, rivet nuts do not suffer from heat. Installing rivet nuts is more convenient than using other fasteners.

4. It is perfect for your industry or application.

These fasteners have been designed for automation and are widely used in the automotive industry to attach items on dashboards. They can also be used in chassis and bodywork to connect roof racks to spoilers and radiators. Rivet nuts work well at all stages of production and do not require any rework once inserted.

5. Use the right tool.

Rigid nuts have a number of primary advantages. They are faster to assemble and require less installation time than other fasteners. Rivet nuts can often be mounted to six-axis robots because they are designed to be automated. You can also use lightweight, easy-to operate hand tools or hydraulic setting tools to install rivet nuts for your own personal use. Here are some of the most preferred options:

"Spin spin" tool: The rivet nuts are threaded onto a mandrel on a pneumatic power tool, and then inserted into a hole in the workpiece. The power tool activates and the mandrel spins fast to pull the threaded part of the shank towards a blind side of workpiece. This creates a bulge that surrounds the unthreaded. The bulge presses against the panel's back, creating a clamping force for the sheet. Once the rivetnut is secured in place the mandrel spins in opposite directions to unravel itself from the nut. The internal threading of rivet nuts remains intact.

"Spin-pull” Tool: An air motor is used to thread a nut onto the mandrel. The rivet nut is then inserted into the workpiece. Hydropneumatic pressure will be used to pull it back a predetermined distance to adjust the tension. The mandrel is pulled out of the rivet nuts by the air motor. These tools are excellent for working with plastic parts.
